The Healing Power of Gems and Mantras

The power of gems cannot be denied and it's for this very reason that the greatest care must be taken when prescribing them. We're all familiar with the axiom that only lords of the trikona houses (1st, 5th and 9th) should be strengthened, but even with these lords, if they're involved in a hostile relationship with another planet and the trikona is not their moolatrikona sign, one must exercise caution as to wear the gem during a dasa of the planet it's hostile to could be detrimental to the significations of that planet.
In the case of the great malefics Saturn and Mars, if they're aspecting other planets, their gems should not be considered unless they're YogaKaraka or unless lagna is their moolatrikona sign. Even then one should exercise caution if they aspect a planet they're hostile to.
The Node's gems can be worn, under certain circumstances, during their own Mahadasa but not if they conjoin another planet. For their lordship consider Aquarius for Rahu and Scorpio for Ketu. For affliction due to the nodes (and for inauspicious transits) one may consider having a yagya done.
Many knowledgeable astrologers are strongly opposed to remedial measures (particularly gems) as they believe it's an attempt to "short circuit" our karma, so to speak. Although I don't agree with this entirely (see >HERE<) I do understand the sentiment behind it.
Wearing the correct gem prescribed by a jyotish pundit (qualified Vedic astrologer) has an immediate and profound effect on the native and, apart from the purchase of the gem, no effort is required on his part...the effect is assured! This is seen by many as an attempt to buy our way out of the karma we ourselves have created and it's held that the karmic debt will still have to be paid somehow...if not in this life then in the next...yet the recommended use of gems (as seen in below quotes) abounds in ancient treatises.

In the "Garuda Puranam," chap. 68, verse 17 it is stated by Sri Suta Goswami,
"Pure, flawless gems have auspicious powers which can protect one from demons, snakes, poisons, diseases, sinful reactions, and other dangers, while flawed stones have the opposite affect."
And from the ancient "Agni Puranam" chap. 246, slokas 7 & 8:
"A gem free from all impurities and radiating its characteristic internal luster should be looked upon as an escort of good luck; A gem which is cracked, fissured, devoid of luster, or appearing rough or sandy, should not be used at all."
And again in the chapters of Sri Garuda Puranam, we find this quote on rubies by Sri Suta Goswami,
"A ruby, although genuine, should not be worn if it has strong color banding, excessive inclusions within like numerous internal cracks, a sandy appearance, a rough surface, or is dull and lusterless. Anyone using such a flawed ruby, even out of ignorance, will suffer from disease, or loss of fortune."
The great Yogi Patanjali said:
"The pain which is yet to come can and should be avoided."

It should be clear that the use of gems as remedial measures has been an authentic tradition for thousands of years. The unfortunate thing is that, for many, jyotish quality gems are simply unaffordable; in which case the native is required to chant thousands of repetitions of the mantra specific to that particular planet. If the mantra is chanted in the correct manner for the correct number of repetitions then the native is also protected from the sinful reactions manifesting through the planets.
Because the sound of the mantra (correct pronunciation) and the method of chanting are of utmost importance it's not easy, nor is it recommended, for lay persons (non-priests) to instruct the native in this form of remedial measure. The jyotisha can play a part in advising which mantra should be used (priests are not always good astrologers) but, unless he's well-versed in Vedic mantras, his role should end with the recommendation. Incorrect pronunciation of mantras have much the same effect as flawed gems. It would be far better not to wear a gem, or chant a mantra, at all than to do it incorrectly.

Charitable works without the desire for reward (selfless service) and regular (transcendental) meditation practice, as taught by all the great Rishis, are affordable, effective and safe remedies...for every chart! And there's never a danger of prescribing the wrong remedy. The very best rule of thumb is "when in doubt, don't".

The Navagraha Stotrams (hymns) are a blessing for every horoscope. To recite, listen to or read the stotram has a balancing influence on all the grahas (planets).

It is important to understand that, whilst remedial measures can be beneficial in restoring harmony to that particular quality (within us), the karma that is due in this life WILL manifest at the appropriate time. Remedial measures can no doubt lessen the pain of negative karma (as stated by Patanjali)...for example, if separation from a loved-one is written into our karmic code, this will undoubtedly happen but, with the help of remedial measures, the separation may be kinder (softer) and acceptance easier, thereby reducing the suffering.
We cannot stop the karma from manifesting...this is written into our karmic code and cannot be unwritten.

Parashara states:
"Note the signs which are the 4th, 2nd, 12th, 5th, 9th, and the 8th from the Moolatrikona of a planet. The planets ruling such signs are its friends, Lords other than these are its enemies. If a planet becomes its friend as well as its enemy (temporary relationship) then it is neutral or equal."
